CPTM joins ULTIMATE project

Consorzio Polo Tecnologico Magona joins the European partnership that is working on the project “ULTIMATE: indUstry water-utiLiTy symbIosis for a sMarter wATer society“.

The project started on June and it will last 4 years; it’s granted on the Eurpean programmes H2020-EU.3.5.4 “Enabling the transition towards a green economy and society through eco-innovation” and H2020-EU.3.5.2.2 “Developing integrated approaches to address water-related challenges and the transition to sustainable management and use of water resources and services”, in topic CE-SC5-04-2019 “Building a water-smart economy and society”.

ULTIMATE will act as a catalyst for “Water Smart Industrial Symbiosis” (WSIS) in which water/wastewater plays a key role both as a reusable resource but also as a vector for energy and materials to be extracted, treated, stored and reused within a dynamic socio-economic and business oriented industrial ecosystem. ULTIMATE will adopt an evidence-based approach anchored on 9 large-scale demonstrations across Europe and SE Mediterranean relevant to the agro-food processing, beverages, heavy chemical/petrochemical and biotech industries.

CPTM will collaborate with Università Politecnica delle Marche,  West Systems srl and Consorzio Aretusa (ASA spa, Solvay Chimica Italia spa, TM.E. spa Termomeccanica Ecologica): Aretusa was born in 2001 for the realization and management of a treatment plant for the wastewaters of Cecina and Rosignano municipalities in order to make them suitable for resuse in industrial activities; Aretusa produces over 3 million cubic meters of treated water per year that are used by Solvay replacing groundwater: recovered water, which would otherwise have flowed into the sea, has therefore become a valuable resource .

Aretusa, CPTM and the other partners will use the grant to enhance the existing treatment plant by increasing its production capacity to the design limit of 4 million cubic meters per year and, by consolidating and increasing the quality of the treated wastewater, increasing the total available quantity.
